The China Open is a combined men's and women's tennis tournament approved by the International Tennis Federation and held annually in China since 2004.
In 2009, the China Open underwent adjustments and was fully upgraded, with the women's event becoming one of the WTA's four Premier Mandatory tournaments
(now WTA 1000 as of the 2021 season) and the men's event becoming an ATP 500 tournament.
As a result, the China Open is now one tier below the four Grand Slam tournaments and is regarded as one of the "four premier events" alongside the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, and Madrid Open.
